governance

Four levels, and the two that matter operationally are the subscription, where quotas and billing live, and the resource group, which is the unit you delete. Getting the boundaries wrong is expensive to unpick later.

Service control policies cap what anyone in a member account can do, no matter what their IAM admins wrote. The craft is choosing a handful of denials that age well.

Account-per-team is the right instinct, but hand-rolled account setup drifts within a month. Vending turns governance into a pipeline with an SLA instead of a ticket queue.

Drift is a governance problem wearing a tooling costume. Detection is easy; the scored content is attribution (who changed it and why) and the policy decision that most teams avoid making.

Scan plan JSON on every pull request, run new rules advisory for two weeks, and block only what is law. Waivers live in version control with an owner and an expiry date, or the gate becomes noise within a quarter.

Quotas are admission-time contracts counted in requests, not measured usage. That single sentence explains most quota outages, most quota confusion, and the reason LimitRange must sit beside every quota.

Two-phase deletion, a controller that purges content, finalizers holding the door. Stuck CRD instances, dead webhooks and GitOps recreates are the real story; standards prevent the ticket.

Dashboard sprawl is an operating-model problem wearing a tooling costume. The scored answer moves definitions into git, attaches ownership metadata to every panel, and deletes without ceremony.

Spending the budget is arithmetic; enforcing consequences is politics plus automation. The answer that lands names trigger thresholds, the deploy gate that blocks releases, and the dated escape valve.

Exceptions rot when they lack expiry dates, named owners and an aggregate view. Structured records where engineers work, auto-expiry with teeth, and a monthly portfolio review that treats growth as a control failure.

Without one, every team implements its own retries, its own key handling, its own logging policy, and nobody can answer what the company spends or what a model change would break.

Most tagging initiatives are spring cleans that rot within two quarters. The durable answer treats the schema like an API contract enforced where resources are born, and knows which lever actually wins.

Refuse every exception and teams leave the platform without telling you. Grant them freely and you are patching nine stacks. The detail that decides it is whether the exception has an expiry date.

Saying yes without a contribution contract produces features the platform team did not design and now supports forever, on call, at 3am.

A model is an artifact with a lineage, an evaluation record and an owner, or it is a file somebody copied to a bucket. The registry exists so that the second one cannot reach production.

Most of the obligation lands on the product, but three parts land on infrastructure: an inventory of what is deployed, evidence of what it did, and the ability to turn it off. Those are platform capabilities and they take months to retrofit.
