Companies / PhonePe HIGH-SCALE PRODUCT & INFRASTRUCTURE
PhonePe SRE / Platform Engineer interview questions PhonePe processes UPI volume that puts it among the highest transaction-rate systems in the world, and it runs a large part of its infrastructure on its own data centres rather than public cloud. That combination makes the interview unusual: expect bare-metal and capacity questions alongside distributed systems and payment correctness, and expect the numbers in a design round to be genuinely large.
Company-specific hiring details on this page are retained preparation notes and have not been verified claim by claim for your role and location. Confirm round structure, timing and tool rules with your recruiter.

The PhonePe SRE / Platform Engineer interview process Limited public data Role Site Reliability Engineer, Infrastructure Engineer
PhonePe publishes engineering writing about its private data centre footprint and transaction scale, but not a documented interview structure. Candidate reports describe strong distributed systems and capacity questions plus payment correctness, without a consistent round count. Ask your recruiter for the format rather than assuming a standard loop.
These retained details have not been verified claim by claim against dated sources for your role, level and location. Round order, duration and tool policies may differ. Confirm them with your recruiter before planning around this outline; an official careers link alone does not substantiate every detail above.

08
Load average is 30 on a 32-core box but CPU utilisation is 20%. Explain. ▼ hard Google Meta LinkedIn 2 notes & comments unlocked
The question that reveals whether someone knows what load average actually counts on Linux. It is not a CPU metric, and that single fact resolves the whole thing.
09
A busy proxy is failing to open new connections. TIME_WAIT is in the hundreds of thousands. What is happening? ▼ hard Cloudflare Google PhonePe 2 notes & comments unlocked
The classic ephemeral port exhaustion question. TIME_WAIT is a familiar phrase and the useful facts are narrower: which side accumulates it, and why the popular fix is dangerous.
14
Walk me through a DNS lookup end to end. What is recursion actually doing, and who caches the answer? ▼ hard ★ Essential Cloudflare Amazon & AWS PhonePe unlocked
Interviewers use this to sort memorised trivia from people who have chased a slow lookup. Three roles, one bit, and the caching rules most candidates repeat incorrectly.
29
After scaling workers the app dies with too many open files. How do you raise the limit so it actually sticks? ▼ medium PhonePe Swiggy Infosys ◆ premium
Everyone knows ulimit -n. The interview question is which process inherits which value, why limits.conf did nothing for your service, and how you size the ceiling honestly.
33
Capture a TLS connection in tcpdump. What differs between the TLS 1.2 and 1.3 handshakes, and why does an ops person care? ▼ medium Stripe Cloudflare JPMorgan Chase ◆ premium
One round trip versus two is the headline, but the ops-relevant differences hide in what stays plaintext, how resumption works, and which middlewares the change broke.
35
Connections through our load balancer reset after exactly 350 seconds of silence. Where do you look and what do you tune? ▼ medium JPMorgan Chase Infosys PhonePe ◆ premium
A reset at a suspiciously round number is a fingerprint, not a bug. Matching client keepalives to the lowest timer in the path is the fix; here is the full ladder of knobs.
49
Redis warns against transparent hugepages while the DBA asks for 2MB pages. Who is right? ▼ medium PhonePe Razorpay Oracle ◆ premium
Transparent versus explicit hugepages is a control question, not a size question. Fork-heavy stores suffer THP copy-on-write amplification while large-resident databases gain TLB reach.
21
Pick an EBS volume type for a Postgres primary with a nightly analytics batch. What decides it? ▼ medium Amazon & AWS PhonePe Goldman Sachs ○ sign in
Volume choice is IO-shape matching: burst buckets, provisioned IOPS and throughput designs behave very differently under mixed OLTP-plus-batch load. Average latency graphs hide the failure entirely.
23
A DynamoDB table provisioned at 6,000 writes per second throttles at 2,000. The partition key is a date shared by many items. Fix it. ▼ hard ★ Essential Amazon & AWS Flipkart PhonePe ○ sign in
A busy date key can throttle while table capacity remains available. Check the actual key distribution and throttling reason before adding capacity or shards.
34
SQS, Kinesis or EventBridge: how do you choose the backbone for a new event-driven integration? ▼ medium ★ Essential Amazon & AWS Netflix PhonePe ◆ premium
Queue, log and router solve different problems that all get called events. Picking by workload shape beats picking by whichever service the team already knows.
36
Every Lambda invocation opens its own Postgres connection and the database chokes past a few hundred concurrent executions. What fixes it? ▼ easy Swiggy PhonePe Uber ◆ premium
Postgres spends memory on a backend process per connection, and serverless fan-out treats that as an invitation. Pooling at the proxy layer is the standard cure; pinning is the catch.
41
Leadership wants a plan for losing a whole region. Walk me through the DR tiers and what they really cost. ▼ medium ★ Essential PhonePe Flipkart Netflix ◆ premium
Four tiers, four bills. Stating RTO and RPO per tier turns a vague resilience wish into a decision leadership can actually price, and the testing story is where candidates fold.
44
Ship a risky schema change to a 2 TB Postgres primary with near-zero downtime. How does that actually work? ▼ hard ★ Essential PhonePe Stripe LinkedIn ◆ premium
Blue-green works for stateless apps because instances are disposable. Databases are shared state, so safe migrations ride on backward compatibility and an explicit rollback boundary.
46
One percent of queue messages fail processing forever and the dead-letter queue grows daily. What is your playbook? ▼ medium Swiggy Uber Netflix ◆ premium
A dead-letter queue with no owner is a landfill with a nicer name. Triage discipline separates teams that recover messages from teams that archive regret.
49
After going active-active across two regions, orders disagree between them. What broke, and how is this done properly? ▼ hard PhonePe Uber LinkedIn ◆ premium
Active-active replication moves writes but not truth. Last-writer-wins quietly discards one of the two orders your finance team expects both to exist.
18
A routine change wants to replace a production resource. How do Terraform updates become replacements, and what controls that? ▼ medium HashiCorp Flipkart Swiggy unlocked
One ForceNew attribute turns an edit into a destroy. Know the schema mechanics, the four lifecycle levers, and why create_before_destroy trades downtime for name collisions.
24
Five thousand hosts across two clouds and a datacentre: what does your Ansible inventory look like? ▼ medium Walmart Global Tech Swiggy PhonePe ○ sign in
Static INI files die somewhere near two hundred hosts. Point inventory plugins at the systems that already know the truth, derive groups from tags with constructed inventory, and plan for stale hosts before they page you.
35
If Terraform already provisions everything, why keep Packer in the stack? Make the case for both. ▼ easy Swiggy PhonePe IBM ◆ premium
Terraform shapes the world; images define what boots inside it. Bake contents into versioned artifacts on a patch cadence, roll fleets by replacement, and keep user_data for identity and wiring only.
36
Everyone does GitOps for Kubernetes. Can the same model govern plain cloud infrastructure, and what breaks in translation? ▼ medium Goldman Sachs Red Hat Microsoft ◆ premium
Distinguish a gated Terraform run workflow from a cloud controller that reconciles continuously. Both can start from Git, but they expose different approval, drift and credential boundaries.
05
What does an Ingress do that a Service cannot, and what is an ingress controller? ▼ easy New Microsoft Atlassian Infosys unlocked
A Service moves connections and an Ingress reads requests. The gap between those two sentences is hostname routing, path routing and TLS, and it is also why an Ingress object alone does nothing.
27
Databases will be provisioned by a Kubernetes Operator. What must the reconcile loop get right, and what when it cannot reach the API? ▼ expert Red Hat Oracle Databricks ○ sign in
The two ideas that decide whether an operator is safe are level-triggered reconciliation and finalizer semantics. The partition question separates people who have written a controller from people who have installed one.
33
Spark executors sit Pending for hours because the default scheduler fragments them across nodes. Can you bring in a different scheduler? ▼ medium Databricks NVIDIA Flipkart ◆ premium
Multiple schedulers are supported, rarely understood, and dangerous in a specific way. The strong answer names the deadlock that gang scheduling fixes and the capacity race it can open.
49
CPU metrics lag demand by minutes because traffic arrives as queue depth. How should autoscaling react to events? ▼ medium PhonePe Swiggy Flipkart ◆ premium
Utilization-based scaling is the wrong sensor when work arrives as backlog. The design questions are threshold math against drain rate, reaction-time bounds from polling, and why lag-driven fleets oscillate without generous targets and idempotent consumers.
56
Your app runs database migrations in an init container on every deploy. Defend or attack that pattern. ▼ easy Flipkart PhonePe Razorpay ◆ premium
The gating instinct is right and the cardinality is wrong: init containers make every new replica race the same migration. Here is the once-per-release shape, plus the rollback rule that shapes all DDL review.
63
Three replicas of one service landed on the same node and one reboot killed them all. How do affinity and anti-affinity actually work? ▼ medium Flipkart Netflix PhonePe ◆ premium
Hard versus soft rules, topology keys, weights that lose to everything else, and the IgnoredDuringExecution half nobody remembers. Placement shapes blast radius only when paired with disruption budgets.
70
The database StatefulSet needs more CPU and larger volumes with no downtime. Walk me through volume expansion and the restart choreography. ▼ medium Razorpay PhonePe Snowflake ◆ premium
Volumes grow online and never shrink; StatefulSet template changes normally replace pods ordinal by ordinal; supported in-place pod resize is a separate path. The craft is expanding storage first, gating rolls with partition, and letting replication lag set the pace.
22
You rolled back to the previous tag and errors continue. What is rollback actually made of? ▼ hard Flipkart PhonePe Uber ○ sign in
Redeploying the old tag reverses code and nothing else. What separates staff-level answers is a per-change map of what rolls back in seconds, what rolls back in days, and what only moves forward.
29
The column shipped with expand-and-contract and a billion rows still hold nulls. How do you run the backfill? ▼ hard Razorpay PhonePe Databricks ◆ premium
A billion-row backfill is a deployable, throttled, resumable job with checkpoints and verification gates. Ad-hoc scripts against prod are how it becomes an incident.
38
Traffic shifting proves nothing for nightly batch jobs. What replaces the canary for those rollouts? ▼ medium ★ Essential Netflix Uber PhonePe ◆ premium
For scheduled and stateful workloads the exposure unit is records and time, not requests: shadow runs on real input, row-level diff budgets, checkpoint compatibility, one-cycle warm standby.
44
CI needs real cloud credentials to deploy. How do you scope, rotate, and respond when one leaks? ▼ medium JPMorgan Chase Goldman Sachs Razorpay ◆ premium
Pipeline credentials are the keys to production and git history is forever. Scoping per stage, runtime-minted short-lived identities, expiry-enforced rotation, and a revoke-first leak playbook.
47
Production is failing at 2am. Design the hotfix path you want built before that night comes. ▼ medium PhonePe Flipkart Swiggy ◆ premium
kubectl-edit happens when no designed emergency path exists. What an expedited lane may drop, what it must never drop, and how pre-authorization plus follow-up tickets keep it honest.
02
Logs, metrics and traces: what is each one good at, and which do you reach for first in an incident? ▼ easy New Datadog Atlassian Accenture unlocked
Metrics quantify impact, traces expose instrumented request paths, and logs describe individual events. Follow a slow checkout across all three while accounting for missing evidence.
14
Write the PromQL behind our availability SLO and tell me where these queries usually go wrong. ▼ hard ★ Essential Uber Razorpay PhonePe unlocked
Anyone can divide bad requests by total. This answer shows the aggregation mistakes that quietly corrupt SLO dashboards, the rate-versus-increase traps that make budgets lie, and when subqueries cost too much.
18
Dashboards stayed green during an outage users definitely felt. Where does synthetic monitoring fit so this cannot recur? ▼ medium Salesforce PhonePe Swiggy unlocked
Metrics describe the server's experience; synthetics describe the user's. The strong answer designs a few money-path journeys from real geographies, pages only on persistent failure, and budgets for script rot.
22
Forty Kubernetes clusters, each monitoring itself. How do you make one observable estate out of this? ▼ medium Cloudflare Uber PhonePe ○ sign in
Forty healthy islands equal one blind estate. Compare the consolidation patterns honestly, keep alerting local, curate what crosses the WAN, and make the global view read-only and cheap.
23
Every nightly job shows green but analysts still get stale numbers. How do you set SLOs for a data platform? ▼ hard ★ Essential Databricks Snowflake Flipkart ○ sign in
Request-shaped SLIs quietly fail on data platforms. The strong answer defines freshness, completeness and deadline SLIs on consumer-visible artifacts, not job success rates.
32
We report one MTTR number and it never improves. Break down where incident time actually goes. ▼ medium ★ Essential Uber Netflix PhonePe ◆ premium
MTTR is three clocks hiding in one number. Profile detection, diagnosis and fix separately from incident timestamps; attack whichever clock dominates, which is almost never rollback speed.
34
A dependency keeps burning our error budget while their status page stays green. Walk me through your response. ▼ hard ★ Essential Uber Netflix PhonePe ◆ premium
Their green page, your red SLO. Separate their true failure rate from the amplification your own client adds, buffer at the boundary, then escalate with a client-side scorecard instead of feelings.
01
A user reports an error. What do 500, 502, 503 and 504 each tell you about where the problem is? ▼ easy New Cloudflare Accenture Infosys unlocked
Status codes describe an HTTP failure category. Locate the component that emitted the response, then use its logs to distinguish connection, capacity and application failures.
11
TCP retransmissions are spiking but the network team says there is no packet loss. Who is right? ▼ hard Google Cloudflare Meta 2 notes & comments unlocked
Both can be right, which is the whole point. Retransmissions mean a segment was not acknowledged, and the network is only one of the places that can happen.
14
p99 spikes, probes time out, CPU utilisation reads 30 percent and nothing is OOMKilled. cpu.stat shows nr_throttled climbing. Explain it. ▼ hard ★ Essential Google Uber Datadog unlocked
Low utilisation with terrible tail latency is not a contradiction. It is the CFS quota doing exactly what it was configured to do. Most candidates have never read nr_throttled.
20
kubectl takes ten seconds, operator leader elections flap, and etcd fsync latency is the only red metric. What now? ▼ expert Google Red Hat Databricks ○ sign in
One disk metric explaining a whole cluster's weirdness is the point of this question. Restarting etcd first turns a slow cluster into a down one, because a restarted member has to catch up before it can vote.
25
A rolling update stalls halfway: new replicas crash-loop and old ones are already scaled down. What are your first moves? ▼ medium Flipkart PhonePe Swiggy ○ sign in
The reflex is rollback and it is usually right. Shared state, changed credentials and unavailable old artifacts can make an undo incomplete or unsafe. Verify those dependencies before choosing the recovery.
36
Redis latency spikes for a few hundred milliseconds every couple of minutes, right around each background save. What is your hypothesis? ▼ medium ★ Essential PhonePe Flipkart Razorpay ◆ premium
Spikes that march in step with BGSAVE are a page-size story, not a network story. Check actual huge-page usage, fork duration and copy-on-write pressure on the deployed kernel.
47
Last night's failover left both database nodes accepting writes for four minutes. Finance wants to know which orders are real. ▼ hard ★ Essential JPMorgan Chase PhonePe Oracle ◆ premium
Split-brain writes are a fencing failure first and a data problem second. Freeze writes, read the divergence boundary from replication positions, and let the payment ledger arbitrate reality.
52
Someone's load test is hitting production checkout right now and latency is climbing. Give me your first fifteen minutes. ▼ easy ★ Essential Flipkart Swiggy PhonePe ◆ premium
Stop the source before tuning anything: kill the runner, revoke its credentials, shed test-shaped traffic at the edge, protect checkout. Forensics and guardrails only after customers stop feeling it.
59
A service starts refusing connections with 'too many open files' after about six hours, every time. Find it. ▼ medium Uber Datadog Cloudflare ◆ premium
Raising the limit buys hours and proves nothing. The six-hour periodicity is the diagnosis: something is opening descriptors on a code path that never closes them.
68
New pods cannot pull images but every running pod is fine, and nothing was deployed. What changed? ▼ medium Red Hat Microsoft Accenture ◆ premium
Running pods already have their images, so a credential expiry is invisible until something needs to start. That gap is why this always surfaces during an unrelated incident, at the worst moment.
02
What does a secrets manager like Vault give you that an encrypted environment variable does not? ▼ easy New HashiCorp JPMorgan Chase SAP unlocked
Encryption is the part people focus on and the least interesting part. What you are buying is short-lived credentials, a revocation path and an audit trail, none of which an environment variable can give you.
12
PodSecurityPolicy was removed from Kubernetes. What replaced it, and how do you roll pod security out safely? ▼ medium Red Hat GitLab PhonePe unlocked
Naming the replacement is the floor of this question. What scores is the audit-then-warn-then-enforce sequence and an honest answer about the vendor chart you cannot fix.
18
Describe the full lifecycle of a production secret, from creation through rotation to revocation. ▼ medium JPMorgan Chase Goldman Sachs PhonePe unlocked
Tool selection is the shallow half of secrets questions. Senior answers live in the mechanics: dual-validity windows, consumer caching, and revocation you have actually tested rather than assumed.
25
Attackers are spamming push approvals at 2am and someone will eventually tap accept. What is your plan? ▼ medium Uber Microsoft PhonePe ○ sign in
Push approval is a weak factor and fatigue is its predictable failure mode. Stop the campaign with number matching and rate limits; end the attack class with passkeys, device gating and a hardened helpdesk.
33
Encryption at rest is switched on everywhere. Where does that checkbox fall short, and how would you design keys properly? ▼ hard ★ Essential Stripe JPMorgan Chase PhonePe ◆ premium
Trace who can read ciphertext, who can decrypt it and who can administer the keys. Key rotation, rewrapping and data re-encryption solve different problems.
38
How would you make the secure option the easy option for developers who will never read the security policy? ▼ medium Netflix Atlassian PhonePe ◆ premium
Adoption is a product problem: templates with tested safe defaults, guardrails that start in audit mode, and metrics on paved-road share. Remove reasons to leave the road rather than writing memos.
06
An e-commerce platform takes 10x traffic during flash sales and the database locks up. Fix it. ▼ hard ★ Essential Flipkart Swiggy Amazon 2 notes & comments unlocked
The Indian e-commerce interview question, and autoscaling is the wrong first answer. A 10x spike arriving in seconds outruns any scaling loop, so the design has to absorb rather than scale.
07
Make a Postgres database highly available. What are you actually promising, and what breaks? ▼ hard ★ Essential Amazon Razorpay Snowflake 2 notes & comments unlocked
Every candidate says replication and failover. The scoring answer names the replication mode, states the resulting data loss window, and explains how the cluster avoids two primaries.
08
Design an authentication service for 100,000 QPS across three regions: 2KB payloads, 10ms processing, 16-core VMs. Do the math out loud. ▼ expert ★ Essential Google Meta Amazon & AWS unlocked
The Google-style NALSD round in miniature. The boxes are easy; what is being scored is whether the numbers fall out of Little's law before you draw them.
12
Design a cron system that schedules two hundred thousand jobs across a shared fleet. What goes wrong at that scale? ▼ hard ★ Essential Google Uber LinkedIn unlocked
Cron is the most-deployed scheduler on earth and the worst-behaved at scale. The scored content is everything crontab cannot do: exactly-once firing, thundering herds, and what happens when the scheduler itself dies.
13
A network partition split your database cluster in half and both sides kept serving writes. What does CAP predict about this? ▼ medium Google Snowflake JPMorgan Chase unlocked
CAP is not a menu of two letters per system. The scored answer knows what the theorem claims (narrowly), what most engineers misquote, and what a split-brain costs when both halves accept writes.
14
A payment request times out at the gateway, so the client retries. Design the API so money moves exactly once. ▼ hard ★ Essential Stripe JPMorgan Chase Goldman Sachs unlocked
Timeouts guarantee uncertainty, not failure: the first request may have succeeded after the client gave up. The idempotency key pattern is the industry answer; the scored details are storage, expiry and concurrency.
17
Design a real-time leaderboard for a mobile game with ten million daily players. ▼ easy Flipkart PhonePe Swiggy unlocked
The vocabulary question hiding real depth: which primitive replaces ORDER BY, why sharding by player is wrong, and what a 45,000 updates-per-second storm actually costs.
20
Postgres is out of headroom. How do you choose a shard key, and how do you reshard later without downtime? ▼ hard ★ Essential PhonePe Flipkart Uber ○ sign in
Sharding buys write headroom and bills you in joins, foreign keys, and every future migration. The key choice is a query-pattern bet; the resharding choreography separates operators from diagram artists.
24
Design the session store for fifty million daily users. Sticky sessions or stateless tokens, and who expires expired sessions? ▼ medium Amazon & AWS Flipkart PhonePe ○ sign in
Size stored sessions from expiry and creation rates, then decide how quickly logout must take effect and what failover may forget.
28
Field agents use your app all day in basements with no signal. Design sync so their offline edits merge safely when they reconnect. ▼ medium Salesforce PhonePe Swiggy ○ sign in
The difficult decisions are preserving offline intent and enforcing rules that span devices. Name the conflict classes and handle each deliberately rather than proposing a CRDT framework on instinct, because most of these conflicts have a domain answer that no merge algorithm can supply.
31
PSP settlement files and your internal ledger never fully agree. Design reconciliation that finds and fixes every break. ▼ hard ★ Essential Razorpay PhonePe Stripe ◆ premium
Listing the match job is table stakes. The scored material is the breaks taxonomy, the suspense account, and why every match must be replayable from immutable raw files.
50
You need mTLS between two hundred services that currently trust the network. Design the rollout. ▼ hard Cloudflare Red Hat Salesforce ◆ premium
Turning on strict mTLS across two hundred services in one change breaks everything that talks to something outside the mesh. Permissive mode exists so the migration can be observed instead of guessed at.
07
Walk me through running a rightsizing programme across fifty teams, end to end. ▼ easy Accenture Infosys Walmart Global Tech unlocked
The tool emits recommendations; the programme is everything around it. Interviewers use this question to see whether you can turn a dashboard into landed changes without breaking production or trust.
11
Pods request three times what they use. How do you reclaim Kubernetes waste without breaking reliability? ▼ medium ★ Essential Flipkart Swiggy Walmart Global Tech unlocked
Over-requested CPU and memory can prevent efficient node packing. Cutting them safely is a measurement problem with a reliability trap sitting in the middle of it.
14
A vLLM pod serving an LLM OOMs at a request rate it handled fine yesterday, dropping in-flight requests. Walk me through it. ▼ hard ★ Essential Databricks NVIDIA Google unlocked
CPU memory intuition fails on inference servers. The scarce resource is KV-cache, requests arrive with unseen context lengths, and the fix is queue-depth scaling plus admission control, not bigger pods.
16
How is rolling out a new model different from rolling out new code, and what does a model canary actually measure? ▼ expert Meta Google Databricks unlocked
Code rollouts ask 'does it work'; model rollouts ask 'is it better', and the second question has no HTTP status code. Shadow traffic, offline eval gates and quality canaries replace the 500-rate dashboards you cannot use.
10
Your on-call rotation is burning people out. Walk me through how you noticed and what you changed. ▼ medium Flipkart Swiggy PhonePe unlocked
Investigate on-call workload with responder feedback and paging evidence, then verify that relief and alert changes preserve service coverage.
13
Tell me about a time you were blamed for an incident that was not your fault. What did you do? ▼ medium PhonePe Razorpay Swiggy unlocked
Correct mistaken incident attribution with evidence, protect the response from a false diagnosis and follow through on the shared record.
16
Tell me about a time you said no to a stakeholder request that would have hurt reliability. How did you handle it? ▼ medium Amazon & AWS Flipkart PhonePe unlocked
Explain a reliability objection through the failing mechanism, a feasible alternative and an explicit decision about the remaining service risk.
26
A teammate's change caused the outage and they are in the postmortem. How do you write and run it? ▼ hard Google Netflix Stripe ○ sign in
Write an accurate incident review that examines the triggering action and contributing conditions, with corrective actions whose effectiveness can be checked.
32
You are the only person who understands a critical system. How do you fix that, and why have you not already? ▼ medium Goldman Sachs IBM TCS ◆ premium
Reduce a critical knowledge dependency with funded transfer work, tested operating documentation and demonstrated backup capability, without inventing personal motives.
38
You caused a brief production problem and nobody noticed. Do you report it? ▼ medium Google Stripe Netflix ◆ premium
Report an unnoticed production problem promptly through the right channel, distinguish actual impact from a near miss and verify the control or detection gap it reveals.

05
What happens at the kernel level on SIGTERM versus SIGKILL, and why might a container ignore SIGTERM? ▼ medium ★ Essential Google Meta Amazon 3 notes & comments unlocked
The question that separates people who have debugged a hung rollout from people who have read about one. The interesting half is not the signal, it is PID 1.
01
What is the difference between TCP and UDP, and when would you choose UDP on purpose? ▼ easy New Cloudflare Google Infosys unlocked
Ordering and retransmission are what TCP adds, and both of them cost time. Naming something that deliberately gives them up, and saying why, is what turns a textbook answer into a real one.
09
The pipeline says the deploy succeeded, but users still see the old version. Find it. ▼ medium GitLab Atlassian Meta 2 notes & comments unlocked
A deceptively deep question, because there are at least six places a version can get stuck and they span the pipeline, the cluster and the edge. Work the path in order.
06
At what layer should this load balancer operate? Explain the trade-off between L4 and L7. ▼ medium Cloudflare Google Meta 2 notes & comments unlocked
A staple of every networking round, and the follow-up is always about TLS termination. Knowing which layer sees what decides most of the answer.
07
What happens between typing a URL and the page rendering? Go as deep as you can. ▼ medium ★ Essential Meta Google Cloudflare 2 notes & comments unlocked
The oldest question in systems interviewing and still the best, because it is unbounded: every layer you can describe is another layer you could debug.
03
A server does not come back after a reboot. Walk me through the Linux boot process and where it can stop. ▼ easy New Red Hat IBM TCS unlocked
Five stages, and which one you are stuck in tells you what to fix. A machine that reaches a GRUB prompt has a different problem from one that hangs waiting on a filesystem that no longer exists.
09
A request crosses six services and you have no idea where the time goes. How does tracing fix that? ▼ medium Datadog Uber Stripe 2 notes & comments unlocked
Tracing is the only telemetry that answers where the time went across services. The mechanism is context propagation, and the reason teams fail at it is that one uninstrumented hop breaks the chain.
02
Explain CIDR notation. How many hosts are in a /24, and why does subnet sizing matter in a VPC? ▼ easy New Amazon & AWS Google Accenture unlocked
The arithmetic takes thirty seconds to learn and gets asked constantly. What it is really testing is whether you have ever had to size a VPC that could not be resized later.

PHONEPE INTERVIEW FAQ
Does PhonePe run on public cloud? ▲
Substantially on its own data centres, which the company has written about publicly. That changes the interview: capacity is procured rather than autoscaled, and hardware failure is a first-class design input.
What scale numbers should I expect? ▼
UPI peak volumes measured in billions of transactions per month at a national level. Design answers that assume a managed service will absorb the load do not hold up here.
How much payment domain knowledge is needed? ▼
Enough to reason about idempotency, reconciliation and settlement timing. You are not expected to know NPCI specifications, but you should treat a duplicate debit as a correctness bug rather than a retry detail.
